Phlebotomy (Training Physician)

PRE-PROCEDURE
INDICATIONS
  • Venous blood sampling
CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • Abnormalities of the overlying skin (cellulitis, burns, etc.)
  • Abnormalities of the extremity (trauma, ipsilateral radical mastectomy, presence of an arteriovenous fistula)
EQUIPMENT
  • Gloves, antiseptic solution
  • Rubber elastic tourniquet
  • 21- to 23-gauge “butterfly” needle, 5- to 10-mL syringe or vacuum bottles and vacuum bottle holder to collect the sample
  • If a syringe is used, specimen containers are needed
  • Cotton balls or gauze for bleeding and bandage
ANATOMY
  • Upper extremity veins are preferable.
  • Commonly used veins include the dorsal metacarpal veins, the basilic vein, and the cephalic vein.

POST-PROCEDURE
CARE
  • Apply pressure to the phlebotomy site until bleeding stops, and apply a bandage.
COMPLICATIONS
  • Accidental arterial puncture
  • Thrombophlebitis
